Thirty eight planes landed in Gander, Newfoundland.

But I have never really heard much about what happened to all of the diverted planes so that was interesting to me.This book was a painful read. I thought this book was a brilliant example of humanity. Another 9/11 story. So I wasn't big on reliving someone else's experiences from that secondhand perspective, but this was a totally different take, and a welcome one.A sweet story about Gander, Newfoundland and how they helped airplane passengers trapped in their small town in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 On September 11, 2001, American airspace was closed in the wake of the terrorist attacks.

I knew a bit about Gander’s response to the crisis and I enjoyed the way this book filled in the details. They offered rides, showers, food, friendship, clothing, toys, towels, sheets, toiletries, and Screeching-in ceremonies. In the face of tragedy and man's inhumanity to man, you have this story of a whole town---indeed, several neighboring towns---opening their homes and hearts to complete strangers.

What I found most amazing about the reaction of the people of Gander, Newfoundland (and environs), was that the Newfies reacted the way people in the U.S. used to react before they moved to bigger towns, or became jaded, or afraid. Such a great story to come out of tragedy. Although an avid reader, this is the first book I've read in 10 years that I literally could not put down!

Fortunately, a pair of rare Bonobo monkeys were tended by their traveling handler. It is about hope and standing together. Unable to get off their planes for many hours, hungry and uncomfortable and with babies crying, these people, once allowed to disembark, were welcomed with open arms and generous hearts by the citizens of Gander and surrounding towns. The book can be seen as a compilation of small stories but will end up adding to a strong message of collective altruism and kindness.Amazing story of courage, understanding, gratitude, humanity in the face of the totally unexpected shocks of 9/11 I don't know why I never found this book before. As a show of thanks, scholarship funds for the children of Gander have been formed and donations have been made to provide new computers for the schools.
