Hit steady snow about half a mile in and would have been able to push on had it not started to rain and hail on me. Not too deep and you can see all the way to the bottom throughout the whole thing. But good hiking boots were fine- no cramp ons needed. We'd love to go back and try again once the snow is cleared!DO NOT TRY TO HIKE THIS TIL MID TO LATE JULY!!! Moraine Lake sits nearly half way up the South Sister and is a perfect goal for a day hike into the Three Sisters Wilderness. While I was there a lightning storm started and that was my cue to make it down to a lower elevation. Like many alpine lakes, Moraine Lake stays frozen for several months a year.

To complete the Moraine Lake loop, hike to the far side of the lake and follow the trail up the ridge to the right.

Lots of dispersed camping with beautiful views all around!From the green lakes trail I completed this hike and ended up with a 7.95 length from the point I left my car to the point I returned to it. Its highly trafficked but once you split off its virtually no one. The climbers' trail back to Devils Lake is 0.8 mile beyond. the first part of the trail follows a river with multiple waterfalls! Not too crowded. Right now it’s almost completely covered in snow with the lake totally frozen over.

This is a different starting point than shown on the map above. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching.Excellent trail. Gradual incline, easy hiking. Better bring your bug spray the Mosquitoes will try and pack u off lol. It's a steady incline to the top. Thank goodness for a lot of shade on a very warm day.
The snow had melted and there were lots of beautiful wildflowers and abundance of butterflies (so many in the meadows that I had to watch my step so I didn’t step in them as I walked). There were still snow drifts on the trail and leading to the lake. Moderate packed snow at the top with footsteps that are easy to follow to the lake. Lots of hungry mosquitos. A decent amount of snow at top by lake. Trail was snowy but awesome! The first part through the woods has lots of mosquitoes so bring bug spray. Can’t wait to try again!Beautiful hike with great views of south sister and bachelor from the top. All in all it was a beautiful day and I enjoyed how few people were there so I could feel alone in the woods and focus on soaking in the sights and sounds of the forest.All around great hike - good little workout, great forest setting, wonderful views and beautiful swimmable lake at the end. Views are amazing GORGEOUS views of south sister. Lake is indeed half frozen. While there was a bit of snow, it wasn't anything one cannot manage, I don't think. The lake is cold, but refreshing to swim after hiking on a hot summer day.

there are a ton of of bugs but so worth it! I would highly recommend the loop as well as there is a wonderful clearing on the western side of the Kaleetan butte which was probably my favorite part. Quite a few waterfalls along the way. In the sun, the black glitters and sparkles from the shine of the light. Had an awesome time!Beautiful along the river. This was a very beautiful hike with very few people (and the few people I came across were wearing masks and practiced social distancing).

It’s a beautiful forest setting with so many waterfalls.

At 2.0 miles, the trail intersect with the path leading to Moraine Lake. The rain started lightly, but by the time I got to my car it was coming down hard. This was a great trail for a quick day hike that I feel anyone could do.Awesome trail!

Even with snow and ice, no areas were so steep we were slipping. Good for all experience levels.if I go again I would hike in and camp then go out a different route. I started from the green lakes trail head.

Would highly recommend snow shoes/ crampons.Awesome trail.

Aligned above and below treeline, the trail passes lava flows, pumice plains, and Moraine Lake (an overused area to be avoided if possible). At this time, there were no bugs and the trail was relatively clear (save for the snow!).

Its hard. first stretch is pretty steep but doable. The lake is sooo pretty!
The mosquitos were out in droves and didn’t seem to mind my bug repellent.

Most of the climb is gradual until you pass the last meadow and then it becomes a set of steep switchbacks. Because it's not far from the town of Bend, t his is the perfect destination to test out your first time backpacking skills, or to take your small kids on their very first backpacking outing. Great trail.

Beautiful with the river tho! Some trails or park services may be closed this weekend so check with local authorities before heading out.

It was coldNice hike with good views but it's hard to find a camping spot if you are looking to spend the night. A lot of snow still but well-marked with sticks in the snow. About 2 miles from the trailhead to the junction and 1.5 from the junction to the lake. We had mosquito repellent, so at least we had that going for us. In another mile, you will begin to enter a valley of ancient lava flow. All easily doable in trail runners.

I'd recommended going the half mile farther toward South Sister to get an overlook view of the lake.
